Anna Hughes - Williams

Anna is the MD of our Intermediate Band

I am the Upper Brass Visiting Music Teacher for young musicians wanting to pursue studying the trumpet and cornet on the Boys' division at Bolton School. There are also a avarety of group opportunities for brass students at school, including Jazz Band, concert Bands and Orchestra.

I studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music under Terry Lax, former lead trumpet of the Welsh National Opera, and at Salford college of Music under John Hudson, former Principal Cornet of Fodens Brass Band - one of the leading brass bands in the country.

As a performer, I have played for some of the world's finest brass bands, including Fodens Brass Band, Yorkshire Building Society (YBS), Cory Band, Desford Colliery, Wingates and Besses o' th' Barn, holding leading cornet roles. I have won all the major brass band trophies titles, including the European Brass Band Championships, The National Brass Band Championships and The British Open Championship. This has given me the skills to have the drive and passion to excel and be successful at the highest level.

As an educator, I have held the teaching post at Bolton School for the last 7 years. Previously, I have had a vast abd varied teaching career spanning 20 years, nurturing young brass musicians to enjoy their musical journey at Rydal Penrhos College, Tower college, Bolton Music Services and Smithills Schools. As well as teaching I am currently the conductor of Fodens Junior and Stockport Schools' Intermediate brass bands.

I am also very privileged to be the current Cornet Tutor and Entrance Examiner for the National Youth Bass Band of Wales, Cornet Tutor of the National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain and previously National Youth Brass Band Band of Great Britain.

In 2017, I was the proud recipient of The Mortimer Medal, which is awarded by the Worshipful Company of Musicians to recognise outstanding achievements in the youth brass band scene.
